Yesterday ISO published the new SQL:2023 Standard, making that day a special day for me as this is the first version of the SQL Standard I’ve actively participated in. The new Standard comes with an entirely new Part 16 SQL/PGQ for standardizing Property Graph Queries, the JSON data type, SQL/JSON simplified syntax, and many smaller things like some new string manipulation functions, aggregate functions, simplification of literal definitions, etc.
I’m especially proud of Oracle, too, as I now know how many of my colleagues not only participate but actively drive the Standard. Of course, the SQL Standard has many members, and all of them are doing a great job, but not many people know how much Oracle actively works on adding new functionality into the Standard, like many of the SQL/PGQ and SQL/JSON functionality.
Standard work, for sure, is an interesting one and definitely not very fast-paced, but I’m happy to be part of it.
