Would you believe me when I say that Oracle provides a lot of free software? The “conventional” wisdom on the internet seems to be that Oracle will charge you an arm and a leg, as well as your firstborn, of course. Yes, Oracle is a commercial company and provides commercial (software) products that are for sale. But that’s true for any commercial company – go figure. The rest of the arguments are usually competitors that try to scare you off. Anyway, I have grown a bit tired of the constant back and forth, so I have put together something.
For many years, Oracle has provided free software. Here are some of my personal highlights:
- Oracle Database Free
- SQL Developer (and now SQL Developer for VS Code plugin)
- VirtualBox
- GraalVM
However, the list goes on. Hence, a while back, we put together oracle.github.io/free, a GitHub page that lists all free software for Oracle. On that page, you can find freely available software, and because it is a GitHub page, anybody can contribute and help keep the list up to date.
